BRO Re-constructs Bailey Bridge

Recently, the Bailey Bridge connecting two strategic locations in Kurung Kumey district of Arunachal Pradesh was washed away in flash floods.

BRO's chief project engineer said: "Restarting the bridge was a daunting task, and all the necessary manpower and machinery were mobilized. Beginning with the temporary diversion of traffic across the riverbed, five massive landslide points were cleared and a temporary crossing was established over a scoured mud-sized culvert to deliver the required personnel, machinery and bridging supplies to the on site.The harsh environment, including persistent rainfall and landslides, presented challenges, with limited space to unload materials, assemble and start the steel temporary bridge, and loaded vehicles had to travel 1 km in reverse gear to dump on site. In addition, a 20-ton excavator was used as a counterweight for the bridge to overcome the limited back-off space. 

During construction, the bridge span had to be increased from 60 feet to 80 feet and then to 100 feet, and during construction, a severe landslide occurred on the site, when several men narrowly escaped with serious injuries.The bailey bridge is a lifeline and BRO deserves credit for its quick restart, restoring the area's lifeline in a very short time
