The Characteristics Of The Suspension Bridge

Aug 30, 2021

Compared with other bridge structures, suspension bridges can use less material to span longer distances. Suspension bridges can be built relatively high to allow ships to pass underneath. There is no need to build temporary piers in the center of the bridge when building the bridge. Therefore, suspension bridges can be built on relatively deep or relatively rapid currents.

Suspension bridges are more flexible, so it is suitable for the needs of strong wind and earthquake areas. A more stable bridge must be stronger and heavier in these areas.

The sturdiness of the suspension bridge is not strong, and traffic must be temporarily interrupted in high wind conditions.

Suspension bridges should not be used as heavy railway bridges.

The tower of a suspension bridge exerts a very large force on the ground, so if the ground itself is relatively soft, the foundation of the tower must be very large and quite expensive.

The suspension cables of the suspension bridge are not easy to replace after they are corroded.
